“Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say, But Don’t Say it Mean.”
Ever hear of a “Mom-ism”? its when something that your mother has said to you comes front and center to your mind at a later time.
We tend to over think or analyze things, especially when it comes to communication. A relationship is a two way street, even when it comes to entering into a personal relationship with God. He likes us to come to Him in prayer.
Think about it… The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
In other words, THE FATHER KNOWS YOU. In Psalm 139:1-4 we read: “Lord you have examined me and know all about me. You know when I sit down and when I get up. You know my thoughts before I think them. You know where I go and where I lie down. You know everything I do. Lord, even before I say a word, you already know it.”
Here is the part we forget or tend NOT to believe – GOD IS INTERESTED IN YOU. WHO you are, WHAT you think, WHAT goes on in your head… The truth is He is interested in what goes on in your head since He created you! This is not a “far away pie in the sky” kind of God. This is a Father who is leaning forward in His seat waiting to converse with you. THE FATHER LOVES YOU. Hopefully the above scriptures will wipe away the conception that He is a distant Father because everything that the Bible says, shows the opposite of that. Talking with your Heavenly Father SHOULD be a two way conversation. If the expectation is for that to be the case through human relationships, why would it be different for Him? THE FATHER DESIRES YOU TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIM and He IS constantly talking with you. How? The witness of God is ALL around us! We live in a very noisy world. The noise is both in and around us. One of the hardest things to do, is to find a quiet place where you can pray and hear from God. The term prayer is one that often causes people to feel anxious. You might be saying, “I don’t know what to say to Him or how to say it.” Well, God created you, from the above scriptures it is clear that He knows you intimately and He wants you to simply be – you. JUST TALK TO HIM.
In the first book in the Bible, the Book of Genesis Adam and Eve clearly had a relationship with their Creator. They talked to Him and He talked to them. They had a “personal relationship,” If you read Genesis, you will gather that to be the truth. Just because God created you, and as it says in the above scripture “knows your thoughts before you even think them,” does not mean that it does not cause Him tremendous joy when His children converse with Him. It doesn’t have to be in the “old English” of the King James Version type of way, or in Hebrew or in any way that fills you with anxiety. Picture Him sitting right down next to you (because being omnipotent, He is) and just talk to Him like He was an old friend. It’s personal and its up to you and you can be sure that He will respond in turn! HE WILL! It might be through a very quiet voice, it might be in the reading of His Word, the Bible. It might be in His nature and world around you, it might be through a family member, brother or sister in Christ or a friend. But here is the thing, the more you talk to Him, the more comfortable you will feel in becoming aware that God hears you and is interested in you! He has plans and a purpose for your life and the BEST way to find out what that is – is to communicate with Him and then to listen.
The more you do this, the more you will grow in your relationship with Him. If you need help starting out, feel free to prayer the prayer below – add your own words if you want. He is listening and He loves you.
“Father God, I thank you that even as I say these words, You are right here besides me. I thank You for being my Father. For caring… For making a way for me to enter into a relationship with You through the shed blood of Jesus. I don’t always have the words to say Father, when this happens I pray that you will look into my heart and help me to be able to verbalize all I need to say to you. Forgive me of my sins, and wash me with the precious blood of Jesus. Lord, I desire to be in the center of Your will for my life. Help me to recognize Your voice and please direct me in the way You would have me go. I love You Father, please be glorified in my life. In Jesus’ precious name I pray Amen.”
