Change in life is inevitable… Just when you think you’ve gotten a grasp or have a great rhythm with life going, you’ve gotten comfortable, feel like you can depend on the routine you’ve established, something happens to make you lose your footing and you find yourself thrown for a loop. It is then that you realize that you have no control over time. You have no control over the events of the world. You have no control over anything, and your footing feels unstable and for many, this is where depression and anxiety begin to set in, because the foundation they are living on is what the Bible refers to as “sinking sand.” Solomon wrote about change in the book of Ecclesiastes Chapter 3:1-8:
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”
Let’s face it, in and of ourselves we are powerless to stop change from occurring no matter how hard we try… But there is something that you need to know, that will stop any spinning, unsettled thoughts going on in your mind, and it is this – the steadfast love of the Lord IS unchanging and dependable. God IS dependable. God IS unchanging. Psalm 36:7 says:
“How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”
Lamentations 3:22-23:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
God did not create us to live independent of Him. That is like believing that you can live independent of having a functioning heart. God created us to be in steadfast fellowship with Him. He IS our source. God created us with a spirit, that has a soul that is incased within the shell of a body. Our very essence cries out in need for a relationship with Him. We live in a fallen world that continues to deny what our spirits are crying out for – fellowship with the One who created us. Nothing can appease that vital need (although we try to quench it by substituting it with other things). True stability is found in Him and Him alone.
Like a parent who knows what their crying child really needs to be soothed and protected, God left the glories of Heaven to personally meet us right where we were at! Born of the virgin Mary, Jesus walked amongst us, living a sin-less life to reconnect us to the Father. Jesus willingly chose to die a horrible death on the cross for OUR sins so that we can through His shed blood and death on that cross (our sacrificial Lamb) enter into a relationship with the Father. And even right now, He is seated at the right-hand of the Father, interceding on OUR behalf. Hebrews 12:2 tells us:
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Holy Spirit has been sent to us as the Comforter, our Teacher to show us and teach us ALL we need to know to live a life of stability in Christ. Matthew 7:24-27 Jesus says:
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
How do you choose “to stand upon the rock of Christ?” You willingly choose to accept Jesus as Savior, choose to make Him Lord over your life, by praying a prayer like this:
“Father God, my life has felt unstable, I have been unable to keep my footing. I’m anxious and scared by what I see going on in the world. I feel like I have no control over what happens in life. But Father, You hold all things in Your hands… Nothing surprises You. I come before You right now, and I thank You Jesus, for making a way where there was no way. Forgive me for my sins and wash me with Your precious blood. I believe You were born of the virgin Mary, that You lived a sin-less life and that you died on the cross for the forgiveness of my sins. You rose from the cross and even right now, are seated at the right-hand of the Father. I believe You will come again. I choose to accept You into my heart as my Savior. I choose of my own free will to make You Lord over my life. Holy Spirit, You are welcome into my heart to guide me and to steady my steps. Thank You, Father, Thank You Jesus, Thank You Holy Spirit. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.”
If you have prayed that prayer, you have just placed your feet on the solid rock of Christ. Your steps are ordained by God. Your heart is being flooded by the “peace that passes ALL understanding.” You are God’s child and His responsibility! In other words, He’s got you! True stability is found in ONLY Him. Life will still rage all around you, but NOTHING will happen to you that God will not allow. You belong to “the Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 41:10 says:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Stability that we crave, that we look for, that we desire is ONLY found in Jesus, our Rock. Steadfastness is only found in Him alone. If you have prayed the above prayer, Holy Spirit even now is filling your heart with His steadfast peace. Soothing any anxiety with the knowledge that while WE are not in control of what happens in the world and with life – HE IS. Your steps are ordained by HIM. Perfect peace is found in HIM. He IS the Way, the Truth and the Life and stability is found in Him alone. Child, you ARE His.
