Storing the Word of God Inside Your Heart

You may have noticed that my writings are filled with the scriptures as examples from the Word of God.  I quote it often.  Why?  Because as someone who the Lord has called to be a scribe, and to worship God through writing, it is important that whatever I write be centered on the Word of God.

Psalm 119:11 says:

“I have stored your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

It’s Not About Me – It’s About Him

In order to grow in Christ and deepen our relationship in Christ we need to read His Word.  The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:15:

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Reading and storing God’s Word in your heart allows Holy Spirit to bring those scriptures of truth forward – front and center when you need them most.  It is also the MOST major way that God (through Holy Spirit) speaks to us.

I will warn you that you may have times when ol’ slewfoot and his demons try to distract you from what you are reading.  Make you feel unbelievably sleepy or try to keep you from reading the Word of God.  Don’t let that surprise you, it’s a tactic that he will use time and time again.  Don’t berate yourself if you can only read a few verses at a time. 🙂  I recommend getting a good study bible.  That is what I use, I find the footnotes extremely helpful me as I study the Word of God.  Another great idea is if you are on the run all the time you can get the Bible on Audible and listen to it in your ear!  I often listen to Christian Books as I’m driving.  Any way you can get the Word of God into your mind and into your heart really will deepen your walk with Him.  The wonderful thing about the Bible is it TRULY is the Living Word of God.  Holy Spirit will make scriptures jump off the pages to you.  Ones that pertain to what you need at the present time.  It always makes my jaw drop to the ground (not literally ;)) When Holy Spirit has me see something my eyes have never seen before.  There is NOTHING more fun than bugging out over the Word of God with Holy Spirit as your guide.

He will teach you so much… You will have spiritual growth spurts, where you are devouring the Word of God.  Nights when you are so into it that you may fall asleep with your face in the Bible!  (I’ve done that!).  Then there are other times where life may keep you so busy that you only have a moment to open up your Bible and quickly read a verse.  God understands.  He knows your heart and He knows if you are truly seeking Him first in your life.

The times when you are not able to read your word will cause you to feel spiritually malnourished – as if you haven’t eaten.  Be careful during those times because you can feel spiritually weak, and the devil studies you and knows when you are at your most vulnerable. See Matthew 4:4 where Jesus said:

“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Even if you cannot read a verse, make sure that you are in constant prayer (conversation) with God. I pray spontaneously as well as when I’m driving, when I’m in the shower…. Random moments that of talking with the Father because I know that He is always with me.  The Bible tells me in Hebrews 13:5:

“He will never leave nor forsake you.”

GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU.  I find comfort in that, and I hope you do too.  The more you surround yourself with the Word of God, the deeper you will grow in your relationship with Him.  The more you will learn to hear the voice of the Lord over ALL the noises that surround you.

2nd Timothy 3:16-17 gives us confidence in the Word of God by telling us:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Hebrews 4:12 informs us that:

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Matthew 7:24 declares:

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

As you read the Word of God it will minister to you, it will heal you, it will change you and most importantly, it will grow you.  You CANNOT read the Word of God and NOT be changed by it.  Holy Spirit is REAL and if you have accepted Jesus Christ into your heart as Savior and Lord over your life than you have received the gift of Holy Spirit, who will guide you, who will comfort you, who will mentor you, who will teach you.  You can learn about Holy Spirit in a recent post I wrote below (Click on the pink link):

Who is Holy Spirit

Growing in Christ is an amazing thing – and it is one that ALL of us who are open to Holy Spirit’s instruction will do for as long as we have breathe in our bodies up until the day God calls us home. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:12:

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

So grab your Bible!  Grab a yellow (or any other color) highlighter pen!  Grab a writing pen! Get a notebook or journal (because you will surely need to jot down notes)!  Put on a good contemporary Christian gospel station for some great praise and worship music to set the tone, pray by starting to thank Father God that we have His Word to read, thank Jesus for paving the way for you to have a restored relationship with the Father and thank Holy Spirit for being right there with you to guide you!  Ask God to give you eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart to receive ALL that Holy Spirit wants you to see as you prepare to delve into His Word and then DIG IN!!!!  May God bless your studies and give you a Rhema Word from Heaven!  Or what I call a “meat and potatoes Word” that will fill your spiritual belly and have you digesting it until the next time your able to turn to the Word again!  Be blessed! 🙂
