As I prayed this morning for a word to write, I asked Holy Spirit, “what would you have me write this morning?” There has been such a spirit of heaviness with all that is going on in this world and I wanted a fresh new Word from Him. This is what He said:
“Ask them, (and ask yourself) this question – who do you say I am?”
Such a simple sentence, but such as complex answer, but it is one that means so much. So as you read this post, I pray you will think on that question. Who do YOU say God is? What IS He to you? Because the way you answer that question is very telling. God has given us free-will. You get to decide who He is in your life. But the ironic thing about that statement, is that “free-will” to choose will either free you or it will bind you up because what you believe is how you live. You live what you believe. So I ask you, as I ask myself:
Who Do You Say God is?
When you read about Him in the Bible, do you see the Bible as just a “fictional, fairy tale story?” Or do you see it as a guide for how you should live? Do you see God as a crutch that some people need to lean on? Or do you see Him as some big “pie in the sky” persona who is waaaaaaay up there. Far from you. Or do you believe He doesn’t exist at all?
How you see Him determines how you live, move and have your being. And what you choose to believe (whether you know it or not) will ultimately determine after this life, where you (by your own “free” choice) will you will spend eternity, whether you believe in “eternity” or not.
Who do you say He is?
I attest to my own answer and go by what I know, what I have experienced, what I have seen and here is the advice I “freely” give (or as some would say, “my two cents worth.”) I did not grow up in a “Christian family,” You can read my personal testimony right here:
But what I will tell you is this – when Sarah Small from Campus Crusade for Christ at the University of Massachusetts, Boston where I was attending school, majoring in theatre, asked me if I wanted to have a personal relationship with “someone who loved me so much” – Jesus. If I wanted to make Him Lord over my life; accept Him into my heart as my Savior, I did, I said, “yes.” BUT more than that that, I prayed that “God would reveal Himself to me. That if He was REALLY real, that He would make Himself REAL to me.” That IF this was to be a “personal relationship” and the definition of “relationship” according to Google is:
“The way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.”
Google also describes it as:
“The way in which two or more people or groups regard and behave toward each other.”
I meant it when I said that to God. And Beloved Reader, God responded. He stepped up to the plate. He IS real, so at my acceptance of Him into my heart, at my “own free will” decision to make Him, Lord over my life, accept Him as my Savior with the request of Him making Himself REAL to me. He Did, He has and He is STILL doing it. Why? Because I decided I wanted to find out WHO He is. And here is the thing – If you allow Him to, God will meet YOU where YOU are. You just have to sincerely ask. ASK HIM. Because here is something else – a “personal relationship” means JUST that. It’s personal. Think about it – you may have a lot of people in your life who you love and care for, right? But each relationship that you have with individuals differ. They are not ALL the same. Each one is special, right? Each person is unique and you may love them all but in different ways because they are not ALL the same person. HOW MUCH MORE DOES YOUR FATHER (IF you allow Him) LOVE YOU?
Who do you say He is?
Because He can ONLY be in your life if you invite Him in. He can ONLY be as close to you as you allow Him to be. Whether or not you choose to believe it does not change the fact that the Bible IS the Word of God. It doesn’t take YOUR believing it for that to be true. But the Bible is ONLY affective in your life IF you “freely” choose to read it. To study it. To believe it. And when you do, what was just before a “book you had heard of, seen or was sitting on some shelf in your home became the “Living Word of God.” But it takes YOU choosing to believe it and more than that read it, and even MORE than that apply it to your life. The Word of God says in Revelations 3:20:
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”
You see, you have to open the door. God will provide the opportunity for you to enter into a relationship with Him (hey, that is why He brought you to this post right now.) But YOU have to “open the door.” YOU have to choose to find out WHO HE IS and allow Him to show you who He CAN be to you. Listen, we were originally made with the sole purpose of being IN a personal relationship with God. You were created to be in fellowship with Him. Because of ol’slewfoot and Adam and Eve’s stupid decision to sin (and I say that because we ALL make “stupid” decisions, so we can’t just point our finger at them…) that relationship that God had desired us to have with Him was fractured. But God in His merciful love for us has allowed, through Jesus Christ, His Son the ONLY way of restoration of that relationship through Jesus’ birth, life and willingness to LOVE YOU enough to die on the cross for forgiveness of YOUR sins (and mine) and because Jesus lived a sinless life – He is the second part of the Godhead, you can read about that more on my site right here (click on the icon below in pink that says, “Home” and it will tell you about the Trinity, give you a better understanding of Who God is):
That Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection has provided THE ONLY WAY for you to come to know WHO HE REALLY IS. But you have to “freely” choose to accept Him. Find out WHO it is God is and wants to be in your life.
And here is something else – finding out who God is, is a life-time journey, because it is a never ending discovery that not only reveals to you who HE IS, but who He has called YOU to be. Did you know that when God created you, He created you with a purpose? He created you with gifts and with plans. He PURPOSELY created you, no matter HOW you came about to be here. GOD KNOWS WHO YOU ARE… And if you allow Him, He will show you who it is you were created to be. And from someone who has been on that journey for 34 years with Him, I can attest that there is NO better place to be than in the center of His will. There is peace there, there is joy there, there is contentment there… There is LOVE. An unbelievable, unexplainable love that I cannot find adequate words to describe because it is one you have to choose to find out for yourself. Jesus paid the price to reunite us with the Father, all you have to do is “freely” accept it. I can give you a gift, but what good is it if you don’t accept it? Open it up and see what the gift contains? Are you willing? Not because someone is “making you do it” but because you want to find out for yourself, who He is.
Jesus paid the price but I wouldn’t be honest with you if I didn’t tell you that growth in Him can be painful, like growing pains, do you remember as a child, growing pains? When your knees ached or for girls – when your chest became breasts? Spiritual growing pains are real, because as you “mature” in Him, He shows you, YOU. He molds you, He purifies you, He grows you, He changes you so that you can see MORE of who He is and become who He wants you to be and once you make that decision for Him, you are confessing, accepting and admitting that as in Galatians 2:20:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
And here is another truth – you can only really know who YOU are by knowing who He is that created you. Ol’slewfoot has blinded so many to God’s truth because he hates you and the VERY last thing he wants is for you to find out who you are in Christ! There are three parts that make you up – your body, your soul (which is your personality, your individuality, what uniquely makes you, YOU) and your spirit. Our spirit was created by God for His glory. It was created to exclusively communicate, interact and commune with God.
Lastly, I believe Holy Spirit wanted me to share this word with you because who you believe HE is determines who it is that YOU will be. Who you are. God wants you to know that the answer to the question of who HE IS, is that HE IS. Whether or not you believe that He is does not change the fact that HE IS. Your believing or accepting that does NOT change the truth. It ONLY changes who you allow Him to be in your life. It does not change who God is. HE IS. God creating you with free will does not negate the fact that whether or not you use that free will to accept it, it is a fact. God IS saying to YOU this day, what He said to Moses in Exodus 3:14:
“God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM.” And He said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
It is only in finding out who HE IS that you can TRULY know WHO YOU ARE.
I know that as you read this post, Holy Spirit is doing a stirring up inside of you. You may not know that is what it is – but He is stirring up your spirit, the part of you that is the center of who God created you to be. Don’t you want to know WHO that is? Who it is that God had in mind for you to be when He formed you in the palms of His hands? It’s simply a personal choice. One that YOU have to determine to make – not for ANYONE but for yourself. And if you do, as I did – ask God to reveal Himself to you, to make Himself REAL, I can PROMISE you – He will. You JUST have to ask… The great I AM is waiting on you. Just ask.
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” (Psalm 34:8)
