Learning to Listen, Learning to Discern…

I have found that in training my ear to hear the voice of Holy Spirit we must still our minds and quiet the noise around us.  Quiet our thoughts, quiet our worries, quiet any distractions that vie for our attention.  For me, it has been something that I have had to learn to exercise the quiet, my mind and thoughts have always had a tendency to stray, but as my desire to hear from God has become a passion, I have made a point to seek God out in a quiet setting, and the Bible tells us in Matthew 6:33:

“Seek Ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all else shall follow.”

This year in particular, has been one where I have had to prostate myself before God and really work on developing a deeper relationship with Holy Spirit (the Third Member of the Trinity).  I have written more about Holy Spirit in the post listed below.  (Click on pink post below to read more).

Holy Spirit

The relationship I have developed with God the Father differs from the relationship I have with Jesus, which differs greatly from the relationship I have with Holy Spirit.  Holy Spirit has been described as the Comforter, the Instructor – I have found Him to be exactly that.  I love Him in a truly special and unique way because He has (and does instruct me), He never yells at me, His voice (which my ear has become in tuned with) is quiet, kind and gentle.  I would be remiss if I did not humbly admit that I sometimes feel dimwitted (lol) as Holy Spirit often has to repeat what He is saying to me over and over again until I get that what I’m hearing is from Him.  He never berates me for it, which makes me want to run up and bear-hug love on Him.  He is my Guide, my Helper, the Lifter of my head.  I love Him passionately and am so thankful that He truly is as described in Psalm 46:1:

“An ever present help in time of trouble.”

Here is something I had to learn and want to share with you:

LISTENING TAKES PRACTICE

Do you want to really hear from God?  Are you willing to do whatever it takes?  Sometimes Holy Spirit (being the Teacher) tells us things IN TRUTH about ourselves that are hard to hear, might make us wince.  But everything He says is helpful – if we allow it to be just that… It is always our choice to listen to Him in grow or to grieve Him and not.  Our free will is always just that – but it is only in listening to Holy Spirit that we really do BECOME free!  Free to walk in the calling that God intended for our lives!  Free to walk in peace, joy and love – fruits of the Spirit. NOTICE what I just wrote:

FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT.

Galatians 5:22-23 says:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Against such things there is now law.”

The fruit OF the Spirit comes from LISTENING to WHAT Holy Spirit is saying to you.  I have discovered that listening IS an art.  Holy Spirit continuously encourages me with His gentle, loving, patient voice to listen.  I’m training my ear to listen – and when I do, I am blessed.  I am strengthened.  I am guided.  I am walking in the center of God’s will for my life.  I am following the purpose God has for me.  I am learning whatever life lesson (or faith lesson) Holy Spirit is instructing me in order for me to grow deeper in my walk and fulfill the purpose God intended me to fulfill.

It isn’t always easy… To say it is would be lying.   But anything WORTH anything often isn’t! Some lessons Holy Spirit guides me through HURT.  They are painful – like growing pains, only in a spiritual nature.  I guess when I think about it, the visual I get is a child who needs a bath but has hard time staying still to get one! 🙂  I visualize a big tub filled with sudsy warm water with a mother scrubbing her child clean with a bath brush or cloth.  The child looks like he (or she) is tolerating it because in order to go forward into what it is they want to do, they have to get through the bath.  But ooooooh when that bath is over, they feel SO much better!  Cleaner, more relaxed and at peace – loving their mom for helping them.  (Loving the Holy Spirit, once you recognize Him as an actual person – makes loving Him so easy).  I LOVE HOLY SPIRIT and once you allow yourself to familiarize yourself with His voice – you realize that Jesus really did us a solid before He ascended into Heaven as described in John 14:16:

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.”

And Remnant, He DID and He IS.  As we go through the many trials that we go through in this life, it is comforting to know that we are not alone, that we are not going through ALL we go through as believers (as God’s Called Remnant) alone.  Holy Spirit is RIGHT there with us. It has taken me years to learn to tune my ear into His voice, and I can honestly say – I’m SO glad I have.  He truly IS the Comforter.  He guides and instructs us and grows us and draws us into a deeper relationship with the Father.  Determine in your hearts to have ears that hear Him, eyes that see Him and a Heart that receives ALL He is revealing to you and you WILL be blessed indeed.
