I read a book when I was little girl entitled, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” by Judy Blume. It’s all about this pre-teen girl who talked to God as if He was a good friend. I still have a copy of the book, why? Because it taught me that God doesn’t want me to talk to Him in any other way then I would a dear friend. People get SO anxious about connecting with a Holy God that they can’t comfortably connect with Him, so they choose not to.
BIG MISTAKE!
Yes, God IS a holy God! The word “fear of the LORD” doesn’t mean fear as in be afraid, it means reverence, it means respect! God has done EVERYTHING He can to prove to us that He desires a personal relationship with us.
YOU AND HIM, HIM AND YOU! IN OTHER WORDS – YOU BE YOU!
In doing so, in talking to God like He’s sitting across the table from you (He is…), you WILL develop the most intimate relationship with Him. Tell Him your heart! (He KNOWS your thoughts BEFORE you even think them, the Bible tells us) so come clean! Tell Him your desires, tell Him your fears! Anything that you would reveal to your most intimate, deepest friend – is how you can talk to your Heavenly Father! And at first it may feel strange, but as you grow your relationship with Him, you will learn to know His voice! You will FEEL His presence; you will smile at private jokes between you and the Father. It TRULY is the best relationship you will EVER have and the closer you draw to Him, the closer you will want to be. Don’t be intimidated with sharing whatever is on your heart, in your mind with your Father, it pleases Him! In establishing a deeper relationship, you grow in Him! It brings about clarity! It brings peace! It brings joy! It brings the greatest of ALL loves! It allows the light of Christ to shine out of you as you grow in your relationship with your Creator, and others will see the radiance in you! He changes you for the better! He fills EVERY part of you in a way that NOTHING can substitute! Your confidence grows in Him! In knowing that your Father LOVES you BEYOND any other kind of love you will EVER experience! And the thought that it is forever! Your heart will rejoice in God your Savior! For you have a GOOD Father Who loves you BEYOND compare!
Don’t let anyone keep you from Him. Don’t let the enemy put doubt or insecurities in you! As you pray (have conversations with your Father) it will feel more natural and you will find yourself doing it throughout the day – just naturally! If you are having a bad day – tell Him! If you are sad or discouraged – tell Him! If something made you laugh and you want to share it with Him – tell Him!
GOD IS REAL! AND SO IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM!
How does God speak to me? Well, the way He speaks to me may be different than the way He speaks to you because it is “a personal relationship”, I’m quite sure the way you speak to your husband/wife is different than the way you speak to your child or your sibling. So don’t compare someone else’s relationship with Him to yours! You are unique! You are special! You are one of a kind! The Bible tells us that God has no favorites – so YOU be You with the One Who created you IN love!
God has spoken to me through His Word (the Living Word of God, the Bible), it is amazing how many times you can read it and Holy Spirit reveals something different to you that stands out than before! I’m tickled by that – but it is
THE LIVING WORD OF GOD!
There have been times when I have heard (internally) the calm, soft, loving voice of Holy Spirit directing me to do something. Now I have “duh” moments where I am unclear whether it is His voice or my thoughts until He repeats whatever it is (sometimes several times) until I realize that it is HIS voice instructing me. He NEVER yells at me – EVER. Remember – the voice of Holy Spirit will ALWAYS line up with the will (and Word) of God.
There have been times when God uses another brother or sister in Christ to minister to me, a friend, a pastor, an evangelist, a blogsite, an author or scribe – someone within the body of Christ –
GOD IS IN THE BUSINESS OF USING PEOPLE
Do you think it is an accident that God brought you to this page? No! Holy Spirit purposefully brought you here to receive a message from God! Listen, if you feel a confirmation in your spirit that something someone is saying (or writing to you) IS of God than you can BET it IS God’s leading. Now, that being said – you need to use discernment and wisdom when people are speaking a word over you. There are MANY who the Bible says are “wolves in sheep’s clothing” so if you don’t feel a check in your spirit or a conviction over what is being said, then chalk it up as someone’s opinion a flesh opinion. Even well-meaning people can guide you wrong. That is why it is important to ALWAYS keep your eyes on God! NOT on people! People will disappoint you all the time! (Even me!) The ONLY perfect Person is Jesus! People are fallible and even if they mean well – it is SO important to develop your OWN relationship with God. He will NEVER steer you wrong, you just have to learn to listen and recognize His voice.
These are just a few ways that I have heard from God, I feel closer to God in nature, so I try to spend a great deal of time in it. If your heart’s desire is to grow closer to the Father –
HE WILL DRAW NEARER TO YOU!
So, in closing perhaps you feel led to pray this prayer with me? It’s no set words; it’s just true desire from my heart that I pray often! Just BE genuine! 😉
“Father God, I thank You for desiring a close, personal relationship with me. I desire to draw nearer to You too! Please read my heart and see that this desire IS genuine! I love You SO much! In a world filled with so much noise and distractions I find it difficult to hear Your voice, please help me to hear You! To grow OUR relationship! If there is ANYTHING that is keeping me from hearing You, I pray that You would remove it! I love You SO much and I want You to know that! I want to live a life that glorifies You! Please forgive me for my sins and wash me with the precious blood of my Savior, Your Son – Jesus the Christ. Bless me this day and help me to feel Your presence ALL around me! Talk with me Father, walk with me! Glorify Yourself in my life! Give me more Father/daughter (or son) moments. Direct my steps that Your name would be glorified, not only today but EVERY day that You give me. In Jesus’ precious name I pray! AMEN!”
